Introduction

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities has been established to promote and develop the rights of persons with disabilities, under the Protection of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act No. 28 of 1996. The National Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities has been established to implement the decisions taken by the National Council. Accordingly, the National Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities operates as the focal center for promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in Sri Lanka.

Composition

According to the Protection of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act No. 28 of 1996, the members appointed by the President in consultation with the minister in charge are as follows. Eleven members consisting of officers belonging to an organization engaged in providing services including self-help organizations to persons with disabilities Nine officers representing Members of Parliament, Provincial Councils, Members of Local Government Institutions, Professionals and Government Officials
